You collect a handful of pebbles and toss them into the Moonwell, one by one. The water ripples with light after each disturbance. One pebble feels different in your hand. You examine it and realize that it is a silvery fossil. Your ammonite carries its own magic in its spiral. In Birdmoss, ammonites are believed to trap and contain bad luck.
Ammonite fossils have rich folkloric associations in our world. In England, they were once called snakestones and they were associated with serpent-banishing myths. Some stories say that they were fairies who transformed into snakes before being petrified. Among the Blackfoot people of North America, weathered ammonites were called buffalo stones and were used in special ceremonies to corral bison herds.  Ancient Romans believed that sleeping with an ammonite under one s head would help the dreamer predict the future. Â
Your ammonite fossil measures 1-2 in diameter.  Ethically sourced in Madagascar, it is about 110 million years old.
Surprising Pebble was featured in the Moonwell Box (September 2022).
